PointClickCare operated a complex multi-tenant system for its customers, with both production and disaster recovery (DR) systems in private data centres. Their existing setup meant that in the case of a disaster full recovery of all subsystems could take up to three days. Recognizing the ability to decrease both Recovery Time Objectives (RTO) and Recovery Point Objectives (RPO), PointClickCare decided the time was right to shift its DR to the cloud.

The primary source of BC Hydro’s generation are a number of large hydroelectric generating stations combined with a number of water reservoirs located throughout the province. Managing and optimizing the output of the generators is a critical and challenging function, and is dependent on a wide number of dynamic variables.

PointClickCare has developed an Analytics platform that aggregates data from various data sources and provides its clients with insights by means of reporting and analytics tools. The platform is built using technologies such as Cloudera Hadoop for processing unstructured and large data sets, ETL for loading and transforming data coming from various SQL sources, PostgreSQL for data warehousing and data marts, RabbitMQ for data ingestion, and Tableau for BI & Analytics. The platform has been deployed in production for a pilot program for US customers in AWS.
